A pilot project of a 2MW computational center for Bitcoin mining was launched in Finland to provide centralized heating to more than 11,000 consumers.
Marathon Digital Holdings initiated a pilot project in the Satakunta region of Finland, where the heat generated from Bitcoin mining will be used for centralized heating. The system involves heating water in the company’s data center and then distributing it through underground pipes to heat buildings.
By repurposing excess heat, Marathon Digital aims to expand its portfolio of sustainable technologies and explore new revenue streams as part of its global strategy to achieve zero-cost electricity for its data centers. Furthermore, according to Future Market Insights, the district heating market is expected to nearly double to $340 billion by 2033, presenting significant growth opportunities for the company.
Finland is actively developing projects that utilize heat generated from Bitcoin mining for centralized heating. For example, Hashlabs Mining is implementing a similar project using WhatsMiner M63 units with specially designed hydro-cooling systems.
