LIVE – Bitcoin Price Slides, Washington’s Political Balance Shifts, Trump’s Crypto Agenda at Risk

Bitcoin price fell toward $75,700 as Democrats captured the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, raising fresh uncertainty over Trump’s crypto agenda. But Bitcoin has now recovered to $77,700 during Asian trading hours, but remained under pressure as Nasdaq futures plunged and investors reassessed Washington’s political balance.

Democrats secured control of the Senate in a sweeping rebuke to President Donald Trump, winning key races in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, Kansas and South Carolina. The House outcome remained closely contested, with Democrats also making significant gains.

The result threatens to complicate Trump’s push for clearer crypto regulations. Bitcoin price weakness now reflects both market risk aversion and concerns that Congress could delay legislation designed to establish a federal framework for digital assets.

Bitcoin Price Falls as Washington’s Political Balance Shifts

Bitcoin briefly dropped more than $2,000 after early election results pointed toward a Democratic victory, falling from nearly $78,000 to the $75,000 level. Buyers subsequently stepped in, lifting BTC toward $77,700 this morning.

The selloff extended beyond crypto markets. Nasdaq 100 futures dropped as much as 2.3%, while S&P 500 futures fell 1.3% as investors reacted to the possibility of tighter oversight of technology companies and AI infrastructure projects.

The dollar also weakened, while the 10-year Treasury yield slipped six basis points to around 4.90%. The moves raised concerns that a Democratic-controlled Congress could limit Trump’s tax and spending agenda, while increasing regulatory scrutiny across several industries.

Bitcoin’s decline followed an already difficult period for digital assets. The king had slipped below $77,000 earlier in the week as technology stocks weakened and investors reduced exposure to riskier assets.

The election adds another source of uncertainty, although Bitcoin’s recovery from its overnight low shows people have not fully abandoned the market.

CLARITY Act Faces New Hurdles as Democrats Gain Power

The biggest crypto-specific concern involves the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, which aims to establish clearer rules governing digital assets and divide oversight responsibilities between U.S. regulators.

The legislation failed to advance through a Senate procedural vote in September, falling short of the 60 votes required. Democrats opposed the measure over concerns about ethics provisions and Trump’s crypto-related business interests.

A Democratic-controlled Senate could make the bill’s path more difficult, particularly if lawmakers prioritize stronger safeguards and additional oversight of the crypto industry.

Bitcoin price slides as Democrats take the Senate, shifting Washington's political balance and raising fresh risks for Trump's crypto agenda.

The election also gives Democrats greater power to investigate the administration and examine potential conflicts of interest involving Trump’s digital asset ventures. Congressional scrutiny could intensify even without new legislation.

However, the result does not automatically mean crypto regulation will become more restrictive. Democrats have supported regulatory frameworks for digital assets, but disagree with Republicans over enforcement, consumer protections and safeguards against political conflicts.

The immediate risk is that negotiations become slower and more complicated, leaving crypto firms without the regulatory clarity they have sought.

Bitcoin Price Hangs on Nasdaq and Washington

Bitcoin price direction will likely depend on whether the election-driven selloff spreads into a deeper market correction. A sustained recovery in Nasdaq could help Bitcoin regain momentum, particularly if investors begin treating the election result as a temporary source of uncertainty rather than a lasting threat to risk assets.

On the other hand, continued weakness in technology stocks could pressure BTC and altcoins further. Investors will also watch whether Democrats pursue aggressive investigations or push for substantial changes to crypto legislation.

The political shift could create a more difficult environment for Trump’s crypto agenda during the final two years of his presidency. Yet a divided government may also limit sweeping policy changes from either party.

For now, Bitcoin price remains caught between broader market weakness and uncertainty over U.S. crypto regulation. The election has changed the political landscape, but the next moves in Congress will determine whether the impact becomes a lasting obstacle for the industry.
