Around 5,300 New Cryptocurrencies Created Every Day

As of April 16, 2024, there are more than 2.52 million cryptocurrencies, and an average of 5,300 new digital assets are created daily.

CoinGecko analysts shared a study of the cryptocurrency market. According to their data, as of early April, more than 540,000 new crypto tokens were created in 2024, and their total number exceeded 2.52 million. Notably, in 2023, 830,000 new cryptocurrencies were created, and in 2022, this number amounted to 710,000. As of the end of 2021, the total number of digital assets was 440,000.

One of the main drivers for creating new cryptocurrencies today is meme coins. Against the backdrop of the meme coin craze, more than 195,700 new tokens appeared in the crypto market in March 2024, a record number. It’s worth noting that CoinGecko analysts don’t report the percentage of meme coins in the total number of new tokens.

The main CoinGecko index aggregates data on about 13,900 cryptocurrencies. However, the complete study of the crypto market was based on data from DEX tracker GeckoTerminal, which tracks data from over 1,000 decentralized trading platforms and allows us to make a full picture of the situation in the digital asset market.

The adoption rate of BTC as a means of payment increased by 174% in 2023. Moreover, 43% of all money transfers in Latin America last year were made using cryptocurrencies.
