Bitcoin Ordinals Protocol May Stop Working in 2024

The Bitcoin Core developer said that the creators of Ordinals were “spamming” the Bitcoin blockchain by exploiting a vulnerability in the network. The project team is preparing an update of the core network, after the implementation of which it’ll become impossible to create new digital artifacts and BRC-20 tokens.

Issuance of New Bitcoin Ordinals May Stop in 2024

Luke Dashjr, Bitcoin Core Developer, claims that the creators of Bitcoin Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens are exploiting a vulnerability in the Bitcoin network, which may be fixed next year.

He says that creating digital artifacts is only possible because Bitcoin Core doesn’t set limits on the amount of additional data that can be inserted into transactions. The creators of Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens are actively exploiting this vulnerability by performing nothing more than DDoS attacks on the first cryptocurrency’s network, essentially spamming the blockchain network, Dashjr argues. He also insists that Ordinal harms Bitcoin and its users, and its impact is huge and irreversible.

The developer revealed that the recent Bitcoin Knots v25.1 update fixed that bug. According to Dashjr, once similar changes are made to the core code, Ordinals will no longer be able to “spam” the Bitcoin blockchain and their creation will no longer be possible. Digital artifacts that already exist will remain unchanged. The developer hopes that the vulnerability will be fixed in the upcoming v27 Bitcoin Core release, scheduled for 2024.

The Bitcoin Ordinals protocol was launched in January 2023, as a result of which the Bitcoin blockchain network was overloaded. And the issuance of BRC-20 tokens further increased the load on the Bitcoin blockchain network.
