Crypto: The Game became the first blockchain project nominated for an Emmy Award. The game was among the contenders due to its unique format and popularity among players.
Crypto: The Game (CTG), an online survival game where cryptocurrencies and blockchain play a significant role, is among the nominees for the prestigious 2024 Emmy Awards in the Outstanding Emerging Media Program category.
CTG has the format of a TV reality show. Ten groups of 80 players each compete against one another in daily challenges such as arcade games or scavenger hunts. The defeated group holds a vote to decide which team members are eliminated from the competition. A vote of the eliminated players determines the winner. Each season of the game lasts ten days and takes place on the Base blockchain network. Everyone can follow the game on the X or Farcaster platforms and listen to a podcast about it.
To participate in CTG, you must pay an initial fee of 0.1 ETH (~$355). Contributions from all players make up the total prize pool, of which 10% is donated to the game’s maintenance, and the rest goes to the winner.
CTG was launched in January this year. Currently, preparations for the third season of the game are underway. The prize fund for the first season amounted to about $150,000, and in the second season, the winner received $274,000 thanks to the growth of ETH quotes.
On the eve of the announcement of the Emmy Award nominees list, the Uniswap Labs team, a decentralized crypto exchange, announced the acquisition of Crypto: The Game. According to Mary-Catherine Lader, Uniswap’s COO, NFTs granting eligibility for the game’s third season sold out in 13 minutes. Dylan Abruscato, Uniswap’s Lead Developer, noted that CTG players include only about 10-15% “normies,” people who didn’t encounter crypto before. According to Dylan, most participants in the competition are prominent members of the crypto community and significant participants in the crypto market.
In the Outstanding Emerging Media Program nomination, Crypto: The Game competes with such significant projects as VR game Catch My iPhone from Verizon, Billboard Music Awards, and virtual broadcasting of concerts at Red Rocks. This year’s nominees include projects directly involving prominent figures in the media industry, such as horror film director Eli Roth, composer Jean-Michel Jarre, actress Lucy Liu, and many others. Jury voting will continue until June 25. If CTG wins, it’ll become the first blockchain game in history to be recognized with a prestigious award.
