Topics related to meme coins accounted for over a third of all traffic on the CoinGecko platform in 2024. Artificial intelligence (AI) ranked as the second most popular theme among crypto users.

CoinGecko analysts published a report analyzing user attention distribution across various topics in 2024. Meme coins emerged as the leading crypto narrative, collectively attracting 30.67% of global investor interest across 25 subcategories.

The interest distribution for the most popular meme coin-related themes is as follows:

• meme coins overall (14.36%);
• meme coins on the Solana blockchain (7.65%);
• meme coins on the Base blockchain (2.13%);
• meme coins with AI themes (1.49%);
• cat-themed meme coins (1.19%).

Beyond meme coins, the top 10 most popular crypto narratives were:

1. Artificial intelligence (12.58%).
2. Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization (8.64%).
3. Solana ecosystem (5.78%).
4. Gaming projects (3.72%).
5. Layer 1 blockchain networks (3.51%).
6. Decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) (3.38%).
7. Base ecosystem (2.68%).
8. Layer 2 blockchain networks (2.25%).
9. Decentralized finance (DeFi) (1.87%).
10. Ethereum ecosystem (1.82%).

The top 20 crypto narratives combined captured 78.72% of global investor interest. The remaining 21.28% was distributed across 180 additional themes.

The study examined interest in related materials on the CoinGecko website based on global user traffic (excluding bot traffic) between January 1 and December 21, 2024.

In March 2024, analysts at investment giant Franklin Templeton published an investor note that meme coins could deliver quick profits despite lacking utility.
