Self-custodial crypto wallet MetaMask has launched a crypto payment card in the US through a limited pilot program. Once the limited supply kicks off, the wallet plans to launch it on a larger scale.
“Today we’re kicking off a limited pilot program in the United States where some of you will get your hands on MetaMask Card and try it out before it goes to a wider release,” the wallet wrote on X.
The MetaMask Card allows users to spend cryptos they hold on their MetaMask wallet at both physical stores and online.
“At this time MetaMask Card is not available to users in New York or Vermont, and you’ll need to join the waitlist,” the announcement read.
With the limited time pilot program, US users can make everyday purchases with crypto anywhere Mastercard is accepted. The card functions like a crypto debit card, the company said.
“MetaMask Card pilot gives people more freedom to spend crypto,” said Lorenzo Santos, Senior Product Manager at Consensys.
“The Card represents a major step in removing the friction that has traditionally existed between the blockchain and real-world commerce. This is a paradigm shift that offers the best of both worlds.”
Crypto Life, a card program manager with Mastercard lending, has partnered with MetaMask to issue the Crypto Card.
Eligible users can register using the MetaMask Portfolio and get their crypto cards by creating an account on the Crypto Life site. Once registered, the card automatically converts cryptocurrency into local fiat currencies at payment time, the website noted.
MetaMask Card plans to Expand Globally
The Card is already available in the EU, UK, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. The wallet launched the card in partnership with the fintech firm Baanx Platform.
Further, MetaMask is also planning to roll-out its crypto payments card to other countries soon.
Users can link their digital wallets with Apple Pay or Google Pay to use their cryptos as well. Eligible currencies include USDC, USDT, and WETH on Linea network, the official announcement read.
