Global platform PayPal World launched, bringing together the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets. The initial participants in the project cover nearly 2 billion users.
PayPal announced the launch of PayPal World, the first-of-its-kind global ecosystem providing seamless interoperability between the largest digital wallets and payment systems. Initially, PayPal World will enable mutual integration between PayPal and Venmo, as well as the launch partners:
- Mercado Pago;
- NPCI International Payments Limited (UPI);
- Tenpay Global.
PayPal World will serve as a solution for cross-border purchases and money transfers, allowing consumers to pay for goods and services and send money abroad using familiar local wallets and national currencies. Users will be able to make payments in offline and online stores, as well as through AI agents, without relying on international payment instruments.
For businesses, using PayPal World means expanding their audience without additional integration costs. Companies will be able to accept payments from nearly two billion users immediately after connecting to the platform. Support for new wallets and payment systems will be added automatically, without needing to update point-of-sale software.
The platform is built on open APIs and a cloud architecture with multi-layered global deployment, ensuring low latency and high availability. It supports interaction with new technologies, including dynamic payment buttons and the use of stablecoins.
For the first time, PayPal and Venmo will become interoperable. Users will be able to send money to each other regardless of which service they use. In 2026, Venmo will also gain access to millions of merchants worldwide where PayPal is already accepted.
Key use cases mentioned in the press release include:
- Indian UPI users will be able to shop in the U.S. via a PayPal button displaying the familiar UPI interface.
- PayPal users will be able to pay for purchases in China by scanning Weixin Pay QR codes.
- Venmo users will be able to send money internationally via the app, just like sending a regular message.
The platform already signed memorandums with key payment market players and will scale up in the coming months. For example, PayPal and Mercado Pago began co-developing additional cross-border payment solutions, NPCI International views UPI integration as a critical step for global growth, and Tenpay Global sees participation as an opportunity to expand Weixin Pay support for foreign users.
In 2023, PayPal launched the PYUSD stablecoin to optimize international financial operations. In 2024, the company significantly expanded its availability to simplify cross-border payments in Asian and African markets.
