E-commerce platform Shopify announced the launch of support for the U.S. dollar stablecoin USDC for millions of sellers across 34 countries. The payment feature will be implemented via Stripe Connect and will require no additional integrations.
Shopify sellers can now accept payments in the USDC stablecoin, based on the Layer 2 protocol Base. The asset is integrated into the Shopify Payments gateway as well as the popular Shop Pay tool. Support covers most countries in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and others through the Stripe Connect platform.
Buyers can pay using hundreds of supported crypto wallets, from mobile apps to browser extensions, including MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Trust Wallet. Guest checkout is available, so buyers don’t need to create a Shopify account or log in via Shop Pay.
Stripe ensures seamless conversion, funds received in USDC are by default automatically converted into the seller’s local currency and deposited to their bank account. However, users can opt to receive payments directly in USDC. All transactions are free of conversion or cross-border fees. Thanks to Stripe Connect, major platforms like DoorDash, Instacart, and Salesforce can now enable stablecoin support for their users.
The infrastructure solution is based on a new smart contract developed jointly by Shopify and Coinbase. It provides businesses with the same flexibility as traditional credit cards, including “authorize now, capture later” features, but with global availability and instant settlement.
Early access to the new solution is already open, with full deployment expected within the year.
According to Stripe, global stablecoin payment volumes exceeded $94 billion over the last two years, with monthly payment volumes tripling, from $2 billion to $6.3 billion. Shopify and Stripe expect USDC to become a key tool for cross-border e-commerce. In the future, the companies plan to introduce additional buyer incentives for stablecoin usage, such as 1% cashback.
Tobias Lütke, CEO of Shopify, noted that USDC support makes online commerce truly global, giving sellers the ability to receive payouts in their own currency and buyers a flexible, transparent payment method.
In late April 2025, Stripe announced the start of testing a new product that will allow companies outside the U.S., EU, and U.K. to use dollar-pegged stablecoins.
