The United Nations (UN) is actively exploring blockchain by launching a trial decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that will explore innovative governance models for public sector organizations.
Based on the Dynamic Coalition on Blockchain Assurance and Standardization (DC-BAS), created by a United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a pilot project was launched to explore the benefits of blockchain by demonstrating the potential of DAO mechanisms in the public sector.
Under the initiative, the IGF aims to show how public institutions can utilize DAO principles to create transparent, secure, and clearly constrained governance systems. IGF officials didn’t specify whether the organization will use the DAO in its processes, stating only that the pilot will focus on exploring the non-financial aspects of decentralized organizations.
Infrastructure support will be provided by the Government Blockchain Association (GBA), a non-profit public organization. The DAO will be based on GOSH, Ethereum’s Layer 2 solution developed by the GBA.
According to Dino Cataldo Dell’Accio, GBA Leader and Chief Information Officer at the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF), the initiative will demonstrate the potential of using blockchain to benefit public sector organizations. In his opinion, the DAO pilot project is a crucial step towards the transition to innovative and secure governance models for public sector organizations.
DAO technologies are actively used in the education system, scientific research, and music industry. Decentralized organizations are also studied by analysts of the World Economic Forum (WEF), who released a guide on their work.
