The approved proposal would reduce NEAR’s maximum annual issuance rate from 2.5% to 1.6%, with the change phased in over 24 months. According to the proposal, the reduction could prevent 11.8 million NEAR from entering circulation during the first two years. Over six years, the avoided issuance could reach 66.1 million tokens.
At full implementation, daily issuance would fall from roughly 89,500 NEAR to 57,300 NEAR. The network would retain its existing distribution of newly issued tokens, with 90% going to staking participants and 10% allocated to the protocol treasury.
The overhaul also introduces a trade-off for stakers. Gross staking yields could decline from approximately 5.27% to 3.37%, assuming staking participation remains unchanged.
However, the proposal still requires Security Council review, a 90-day grace period, and validator adoption before the changes become binding.
